When you’re caught up in one of life’s messy spots it is so easy to just slip under the covers, throw on a hat, and let yourself get lost in the storm. This is the time when taking care of yourself is more important than ever! Here are some simple things you can do to feel and look your very best when you are going through hell.
- Take care of your nails! This may sound ridiculous, but have you ever noticed that when your nails look nice you just feel better?! With that little boost of self-esteem, you will feel empowered to take a step forward to get out of that mess you’re in. When life is going good you can have chipped nail polished, but when life doesn’t go as planned it’s the little things you can control that make all the difference. If you can’t afford a mani/pedi, buy a bottle of polish and a file. Trust me, it is a $5 make-over you won’t regret.
- If nails are important, hair is equally crucial. Ditch the dry shampoo and wash your hair! Don’t hide behind a hat unless it’s a super cute hat that makes you feel like the boss. Color those roots whether you go to the salon or you get it out of a $10 box. Style your hair every single day, even if you are staying home. Oh and repeat after me, “I will not chop my hair off or dye it pink when I am not thinking straight!” Keep it simple girlfriend! You are in no position to be making rash decisions.
- Wear nice underwear! I get it, no one sees your underwear, but nice clean underwear will put a skip in your step that you need right now. I don’t know what it is, but when I have nice underwear on I feel like I can rule the world! Trust me, I know it sounds silly, but it is so true! Plus, even if you can’t afford a new outfit, you can most likely afford a new pair of underwear! I shop the 5/$20 deal at Target and it makes me feel like I have new clothes for a week!
- Get Your Sleep. I don’t mean sleep for days on end. I mean set a routine to go to bed the same time every night and get up at the same time the next morning. Sleeping when your life is chaotic can be really tough, but try to set the tone for sleep and do your best to aim for 8 hours. No more, no less. It’s impossible to think clearly when you aren’t getting sleep. Make it a priority in your life.
- Do the 10-Minute Pick-Up. I don’t know about you, but I have zero motivation to clean my house when I am down in the dumps. That’s ok, but tell yourself you are going to at least do the 10-Minute pick-up every single day. Set a timer for 10-minutes and see what you can pick-up or get done around the house. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish. Even better, get the kids involved if they are old enough. Your 10-minutes instantly transforms into 30 or 40+ minutes of cleaning! When your surroundings at least look presentable it will put you in a way better mood.
No matter how difficult life gets, follow these five simple rules and you will be amazed at how it changes your perspective on the world!
